The March Madness Book Tournament!

March Madness has come to Room 224!

Our brackets are ready to go! Which book will win the tournament?  Only time will tell.

Selection Day began as these 16 books were chosen after the first graders scoured our monthly read aloud charts and carefully thought about all of the fantastic books we've read so far this year.

Today was the first match-up.  We read Mr. Tiger Goes Wild and Marvin K. Mooney Will You Please Go Now!.

We voted by secret ballot for our favorite book, using Google Forms.

And today's winner was...Mr. Tiger Goes Wild!  This book will move on to the next round of competition.  We will continue to read the remaining books until we narrow it down to one champion.

As a fun twist to our tournament, the students also predicted which book will make it to the last round of play and be crowned the winner.  The student or students who guessed the correct title, will win a free book from an upcoming Scholastic Book order.   Let the games begin!

More updates to follow, as this exciting book tournament continues.

A few other special celebrations this week were:  Dr. Seuss's Birthday and World Read Aloud Day.  In honor of Dr. Seuss, we read a weekly reader about him and read several of our favorite Dr. Seuss books.  Three of Mrs. Schieber's 2nd Graders joined us on World Read Aloud Day to read us their favorite story (Bugs in my Hair by David Shannon) and present us with an official certificate!

Have a wonderful week!

February: A Month in Review

Please enjoy a look back at February.

100th Day...

Welcome to 100th Day!

It's hard to believe we've come this far!

We did many fun activities this day, including lots of counting and creating Pic Collages featuring the number 100.

We used our engineering skills to stack 100 cups.

Some made several mountains.

Each group used all 100.

There were some tense moments...

Yet, we all used teamwork to successfully build.

These were some of our 100 Day reads.

Valentine's Day...

Delivering valentines was a blast!

Making our craft was fun!
We love to create!

Jump Rope for Heart...

Hula Hooping was a fun way to exercise.

More hula hooping!

Exploring the different stations...
Group jumping!
All in all, Jump Rope for Heart was a real success!  Our school raised lots of money to help the cause.   Thanks for your donations and support.

In between all of the special days, we were busy with lots of important things like writing our teaching books, and learning about space.
Writing...

Here we are doing a museum walk.  We are visitors looking at each other's teaching books.

The gallery was filled with interesting reads.

We gained some new ideas by looking at the different authors' stories.

Our Informational Writing Poster is growing each day, with more craft ideas we can use to teach our readers about our area of expertise.

Science...

We have been learning about space:  the sun, moon, and Earth.

This is our schema on the Earth before we did our research.

Here are some Pic Collages we created after we spent time reading about the Earth.

When we are at the Being an Observer Daily, we spent our time reading about space, and completing the solar system puzzle.

We also took notes during this Daily to add to our schema.

This week, we are wrapping up our informational writing unit by putting the final touches on our Earth books.  Next up, opinion writing.
