We Are Wild About Writing! ... Research Writing, Opinion Writing, and an Author Visit...

We finished our animal research books, and also created posters on a new iPad app called "PicCollage". We look forward to sharing all of our learning with you in April at Open House.  Here is a sneak peak of a few things you will see!

Animal Research

More Research

Our newest unit of writing is Opinion Writing.  We began by studying our collections and choosing our "best in show".  We had fun explaining our reasons for our rankings.  We started by judging Miss Steimel's childhood collection of horses!

Which is "best in show"?

Our judges were hard at work.

We worked in small groups creating convincing reasons why our chosen horse was our favorite.

Next, we shared our own collections, and decided which item in our collections was "best in show".  We were sure to compare like characteristics like judges do in horse or dog shows (i.e. fur, height, eyes...).

We did a museum walk to check out the collections.

It was fun to see our many interests.

Very interesting!

Many brought in rock collections.

Others brought doll or toy collections.

Book collections were also popular.
We are also learning about writing reviews. These are some examples of the anchor charts we have created to aid us in our writing.

We have also enjoyed reading fiction books where the characters give their opinons.  These two favorites are about convincing parents!

We are learning that good reviews include lots of reasons and details.  We want to be very convincing to our readers, almost like the commercials we see on television.  We continue to work on writing good leads and endings for our stories.

Finally, please enjoy the following pictures from the many exciting activities we've been up to the last couple of weeks.

Author Carron Brown came to share her awesome books last week....

She started by showing us her home city, London.

She loves wildlife and was always a curious child.

She showed us her many published books.  We read three of them the week before she visited:  Secrets of the Apple Tree, Secrets of the Rainforest and Secrets of the Seashore.

She read one of her books aloud to us.
One special thing about her books are the hidden pictures that can be seen by shining a flashlight behind each page.  She even shared her secrets on how to create books like these ourselves!

Carron Brown demonstrates illuminating the pages to uncover the hidden pictures.

What a great author visit!

Jump Rope for Heart

First Grade got lots of exercise for a good cause.

Hula hooping!

Nice work!

This Jump Rope for Heart station allowed students to cool down.

Lunch in the Classroom

Students chose to make it a picnic lunch.

Eating in the classroom was fun.

Let's celebrate again soon!  Our class is almost to our next goal.  We hope to earn more 5's in specials soon!
